“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken adults.”
The Perfect Storm
Our country’s current social situation is being referred to as a ‘perfect storm;’ as the demands for human services rapidly increase, the funds available to pay for them just as quickly shrink. Funding preventive services such as child care, early intervention, family counseling and access to quality health care are essential if we are to remain a viable, caring society. Studies show that for every dollar of preventive services we cut today, it will cost us seven dollars tomorrow to cover the resultant effects such as detention, incarceration, foster care, unemployment, acute health problems, or worse.
The United States has built its reputation on unselfishly caring for the crucial needs of the weakest children and families living among us. It is how we define our humanity. As we collectively enter this ‘storm,’ we must not fail to continue these commitments. As you look into your children’s eyes today, try to imagine what their world will be like tomorrow if we don’t hold strong to these societal values.
After all, anyone of us at any time could depend on this help.
